Scholar's Mate
The four-move checkmate nearly every new player meets once. Here is how it works, and the one pawn move that stops it.
Trap · as White
The trap
- 1.e4 · The king's pawn opens lines for the queen and the light bishop.
- 1...e5 · Black replies with the classical move.
- 2.Bc4 · The bishop aims at f7, the softest spot in Black's camp.
- 2...Nc6 · Black develops, which is good, but keep an eye on f7.
- 3.Qh5 · The queen comes out early, and now two pieces attack f7, while only the king defends it.
- 3...Nf6?? · The natural move that loses on the spot: it attacks the queen but does nothing for f7.
- 4.Qxf7# · Checkmate. The bishop protects the queen, so Black's king cannot take it.
How to beat it
- 3...g6! · The pawn blocks the queen's path to f7 and attacks the queen at the same time.
- 4.Qf3 · The queen keeps aiming at f7 from a new square, threatening mate again.
- 4...Nf6 · Now the knight blocks the f-file. The mate is gone and Black is comfortable.
The story
Scholar's Mate is the first trap most people ever see. White brings the queen and the light bishop out early, both aiming at f7, the one square next to Black's king that only the king defends. If Black develops without looking, the queen takes on f7 and the game is over in four moves. It is the classic first lesson in why f7 matters.
It is everywhere online for a simple reason: it works against beginners, again and again. New players try it in their first games, and new players fall for it in theirs, and even strong players have been known to try it in very fast games. That is why it is so often the first trap a coach teaches and the first one a chess video warns about.
Against anyone who knows it, though, the early queen becomes a target. Block with ...g6, shut the f-file with the knight on f6, and chase the queen around while you develop. White ends up with nothing, and Black is the one who is comfortable.
