Four Knights Game

All four knights come out before anything else. A calm, classical start that is easy to learn and hard to go wrong in.

The idea

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6, both sides have developed their knights to their best squares. White then chooses a plan. 4.Bb5, the Spanish Four Knights, puts pressure on the knight that guards e5. 4.d4, the Scotch Four Knights, opens the center. 4.Bc4 turns into the Italian Four Knights, where Black has the tactical shot ...Nxe4.

The positions are usually symmetrical early on, so small advantages decide the game: who castles first, who wins the fight for d5 or d4, and who gets the better bishop. The Halloween Gambit, 4.Nxe5, is a wild sacrifice for those who want chaos.

Quiet and principled. The Four Knights follows the basic rules of the opening so closely that it was a favorite teaching opening for a century. It leads to sound positions with clear plans and little risk.

Beginners and improving players who want simple development and few traps. It is also a handy way for White to avoid sharp Petrov or Sicilian-style lines.

In symmetrical lines, copying the opponent too long can lose a tempo or walk into a pin. Look for the moment to break the symmetry first.

The main line, move by move

  1. 1.e4 · White puts a pawn in the center, where it controls d5 and f5, and frees the queen and the king's bishop. It is the classic first move.
  2. 1...e5 · Black takes an equal share of the center and frees the same pieces. Both sides now race to bring the knights and bishops out.
  3. 2.Nf3 · The knight comes out to its best square and attacks e5 at once, so Black must spend a move on the pawn.
  4. 2...Nc6 · Black guards e5 with the knight, the most useful defense, since it develops a piece at the same time.
  5. 3.Nc3 · White develops the second knight to c3, where it guards e4 and watches d5. It is calmer than 3.Bb5 or 3.Bc4: White keeps the bishops back a move and develops in a simple, symmetrical way.
  6. 3...Nf6 · Black's knight attacks e4 and guards d5, keeping the symmetry. This is the Four Knights Game: all four knights are out, and the fight is about who breaks the symmetry first.
